Today is Product Review Day! W00t! I had the fabulous opportunity to review compression sleeves (FINALLY!) by SureSport Athletic Performance Gear. In the name of transparency, I received two sets of compression sleeves from the company for review. Read on for the good, the bad, and the ugly!
SureSport Athletic Performance Gear is a “local” company. They are headquartered in the greater Cleveland area, which made it that much more awesome for me to be able to try out these sleeves. I love supporting local businesses. Anyways, SureSport specializes in orthopedics, braces, supports, compression, and kinetic tape. They are actually working on bringing their first compression socks to the market, and I’m sure they will nail it and become a major competitor in the compression sock market.
On to the sleeves! As you know, I love compression socks. But as the summer months are quickly approaching, I realized my legs and feet would become irritatingly hot and sweaty in compression socks. I’ve been thinking of socks (or bare feet), and sleeves for recovery when it gets too warm for the full ensemble. I have also been considering compression sleeves for during my run — not just post-run recovery.
When purchasing compression anything for your legs, it is in my professional opinion that you should truly consider sizing first and foremost. There is a plethora of socks and sleeves to choose from, ranging from the fun and funky to the down-to-business basics. What it boils down to, though, is the fit. If you love the style of a pair but they don’t fit properly, then you’ve essentially just wasted $50+ on an item that will give you no benefit whatsoever. Having said that, most compression socks and sleeves size by calf size. I measure at 13″. I asked my contact at SureSport what he thought I should do in terms of sizing, and he suggested size small for recovery, and size medium for running (to allow for the increase in muscle size during activity). I heeded his advice. Picture above is size small (pink) and size medium (green).
Let’s just say that size is CRUCIAL. As I excitedly tore open my package from SureSport, I struggled — STRUGGLED — to put the pink sleeves on. Whoo, were they tight! I thought for sure I would never wear them. I tried on the green ones — much better.
My son opted to test out the pink ones for me. 🙂
The first day, I loved them. They fit perfectly, and they were really comfortable. They definitely met my expectations.
The next time I wore them, I put on the green ones and they didn’t quite feel tight enough. Could it be? I would need the pink ones for recovery after all? After struggling again (yes, I am not graceful and have not quite mastered the putting-on of the compression-wear yet), I traipsed around with the pink ones on all day. Lo and behold, they were amazingly comfortable. I never felt like they were too tight, and I genuinely enjoyed my recovery that day. (Really? Enjoy recovery? Sometimes I surprise even myself.)
Fast forward to this morning, and I decided to give the green ones a whirl on my 5-miler. I ran indoors this morning as it was raining when I woke up. I’m a big baby and hate running in anything except for 50˚ sunshine. Yep, I said that.
I pulled on the green sleeves, and started out on my run. It felt amazing when I first put them on because I have very tired legs this morning. But after about a half mile I wasn’t quite comfortable. I just felt… off. It was a really strange sensation to have my calves compressed but not my feet. I am 100% certain the SureSport compression sleeves had nothing to do with it. I just don’t know if a) I don’t like running in sleeves or b) if I just don’t like running in them on the treadmill. I am definitely going to try them out again this weekend on my long run and see if that makes a difference. Running on a treadmill takes some concentration. You know, so you don’t fall off and all…
Bottom line — would I recommend SureSport Compression Sleeves to a friend? YES! Would I purchase them for myself? YES! And, will I consider their compression socks when they debut? Absolutely!
Not only are the sleeves very comfortable, the customer support at SureSport is amazing. They are super friendly, and extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I am grateful I had the opportunity to try out some compression sleeves.
Hope you have an awesome day, friends! And check out some compression gear. You won’t regret it.
