It’s true — I talk about nutrition a lot. Like here, here, and here. What can I say? It’s an important topic! One of the more recent times I’ve gotten into nutrition was in my discussion of Bob’s Red Mill protein powders. I actually promised you a recipe in that post. Lucky you because today is that day, my friends. Today as part of the Running Coaches’ Corner linkup, I present to you a recipe for energy balls.
A note about marathon fuel: if you’re new to the marathon (and half marathon) dance, it’s all about you. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to fueling. What works well for one person will have disastrous consequences for the next. Make it your business to try different fuels during your training cycle. You’ll be glad you did.
Before you continue on, check out my post about Bob’s Red Mill protein powders and why they’re awesome.
These are no ordinary energy balls. In fact, they’ll become my go-to fuel for my long runs during this marathon training cycle. They’re gluten-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free, which is phenomenal for my sensitivities — and probably for some of yours, too. Check it out:
Protein & Fiber Energy Balls
Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free, Dairy-free
Ingredients
- 1/2 C almonds, processed
- 3 Tbsp Bob’s Red Mill Protein & Fiber Nutritional Booster
- 1/4 C ground flaxseeds
- 2-3 Tbsp honey
- 1-2 Tbsp maple syrup
- 1/4 C raisins
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 30-40 minutes. Remove from the refrigerator and shape into 1″ balls. Store energy balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Keeps well up to two weeks.
If you plan on taking these out with you on the trail or the road, cut cling wrap into 4″ squares and wrap balls individually. Easy snack to grab and go!
I think you’ll really love these energy balls. The best part is they pack a nutritional punch. They’re easy to eat, easy to digest, and fun to make.
Be sure you have the ingredients for the recipe and enter to win some of your own!

I was so excited when I found out Bob’s was making a protein powder. I usually shy away from them but if it’s from Bob’s, it has to be good. And it is! This recipe is perfect for grab and go recovery from a hard run.
I love bob. He is a good man, and nutrition is too important not to trust good men!
He makes some good nutrition, that’s for sure.
These sound so delicious! Love energy balls. I tried some Bob’s Red Mill samples through a campaign also – love the nutritional booster with chia seeds!
I’m a big fan of energy balls, too. They’re so good!
These look yummy! Energy balls seem to be all the rage right now, and I am late to the party. Thanks for sharing!!
Never too late for some delicious energy balls. 🙂
Love the flaxseeds in there- these look amazing!
Easy and nutritious 🙂
The protein and fiber or the chocolate powder sound good! I would have never thought these types of balls could be used to fuel a marathon! I may have to give it some thought since I’ll be training for my first!
It’s all very personal and a lot of trial and error. I do better with real food than with gels and chews. (Though I do love Honey Stingers and ProBar BOLT.) But anything over about 15 miles, I need some sustenance.
I’d love to win and would try the vanilla flavor. I like that you made protein balls out of it.
Good luck!
I would love to try the chai flavor! That sounds delicious!
Vanilla sounds yummy to me.
I love Bob’s Red Mill but had no idea they made protein powder… will definitely like to try it!
Yep! And a whole bunch of other awesome stuff, too.
Making my own balls is something I adore doing 😉 I tend to eat a lot of the “batter” when I do it though, hahaha!
I agree, I like making my own. They’re so fun to make and you can mix/match ingredients!
Vanilla!
I would probably choose Chocolate. Thanks.
oooo yes! Can’t wait to make these!
=)
I would love to try the chai flavor!
I would love to try the chocolate flavor!!
Chai!
I’d love to try the chocolate! Thanks for the chance!
Your energy bites sound delicious and super easy to make – thanks so much for sharing! The chai protein powder sounds delicious. Thanks for the giveaway!
So easy to make!
These would make the perfect post run or hiking snack! I bet the vanilla flavor taste really good in energy balls.
They are perfect for hiking! I’ve done that with them, too. 🙂
I love Bob’s Red Mill and I’m so happy they’re making a protein powder. I think it’s time I jump on the energy ball train. These look great!
Energy balls are so good, Debbie. You’ll love them!
I would love to try the vanilla flavor and make some fruit smoothies!
I would try vanilla.
I would choose the vanilla protein powder.
Can’t go wrong with chocolate flavor
I would love to try the protein and fiber!
I love energy balls. And I’ve actually never tried an unflavored protein powder…seems like it would be a useful thing to have around!
I love unflavored protein powder. It’s so easy to make new recipes when it’s not predetermined by chocolate, vanilla, etc.
Chai is my fav!
I would choose the Protein and Fiber.
Chai!! I adore Chai!!
I would choose the Chocolate flavor if I win.
