Staying Grounded with Running and Fitness in 2020

June 10, 2020

The one thing keeping me grounded and sane through 2020 has been running and teaching my fitness classes online. They’ve been sanity-savers!

Fact: life as we know it has been turned upside down since March 2020. Parents suddenly became teachers. Teachers abruptly took their classrooms online. And workers not used to working from home quickly learned the self-discipline necessary to stay on task when it would become easy to be distracted. Others of us lost jobs and went on unemployment. And that was just March…

Here we are, now a full three months later, and despite our country (and the world) reopening, things are still upside down — in many different ways.

Staying Grounded with Running and Fitness in 2020

The one thing keeping me grounded through all of this has been running and fitness. I’ve been a certified running coach for five years now, and a trainer for two. Running and fitness is my lifeblood, both as a runner and a coach.

Running and Fitness in 2020 | Running on Happy

When things started going down, I was still running weekly with a friend. I knew her situation very well and knew she was being safe, smart, and proactive to keep her family safe from contracting COVID-19. And she knew I was doing the same. So almost immediately, without much thought, and without truly realizing it, we created a quarantine bubble. We’ve run through single digits, ice and snow, heat and humidity, and we’re currently logging significant miles together. I’m so grateful to have been able to continue running through all of this.

My run coaching business has been almost entirely online from the outside, but not my training classes. I adapted and moved my fitness business online with the shutdown. I now hold classes four days a week on Zoom. And let me just tell you something. It’s been amazing. No, it’s not the same as training in person. But I’ve remained connected with my clients and I’ve even gained some new ones.

Running and Fitness

For me, running and fitness has been a sanity-saver. Without all those miles and all those fitness classes, I don’t know where I’d be today. I’m not sure what the future holds in terms of races and in-person fitness. But for now, I’m going to keep logging miles and training online.

And a quick side note: I am indeed training for another 50K. So far it looks like it’s still on. As long as it’s on, I’m in. I’ll continue logging and increasing mileage. Fingers crossed there’s a race! I’ll be sharing more about what I’m up to next week!

I’m grateful for running and fitness–I’ve needed it to get through this crazy year so far! I’m glad I was able to continue strength training at home, with modifications. That will continue. Hoping my 50k takes place too!

I hope it does! You’ll love it. And even if it doesn’t this year, you’ll just have to do it in 2021!!

It sure has been a crazy ride! Some birthday present LOL (My bday is March 14th, and all H3LL broke loose from there-on this year). Fortunately, my work routine has remained stable, albeit with a much smaller office crew (most were WFH). And, my fitness has maintained, although all of my races either were cancelled or went virtual (as did everyone else’s). Just got word yesterday that Air Force 26.2 is a no-go…so, I’m on the fence if I want to pursue a different fall marathon or just skip the 26.2 gig for 2020. I’m going to continue training though…you know, just for fun ๐Ÿ˜‰

You should find a small trail race to join! I bet you have some good options there. ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice that you can train for a 50K!
All our races for this year have been cancelled – so you’re very lucky! I wish I had a race to train for!
Running has definitely helped through these strange times. I exercise with video classes by Pamela Reif. They’re quite tough!

It’s looking like most of our races will be cancelled, too. And the bigger ones definitely should be because there’s no way to appropriately distance with so many people!

Running and fitness sure has been a sanity saver for me these last few months more than ever. I have found so many new classes to try and enjoy. It is great that your clients are responding so well to your Zoom sessions. Oddly, I don’t miss my personal trainer right now. Don’t tell him but I am kind of enjoying a break from him and trying new things. Not sure what will happen with this!

Haha! I’ve heard from so many people who are questioning whether they’ll go back to their gyms when this is all over. I’ve enjoyed doing the online classes and honestly, if/when I go back to teaching at the gym, I’ll probably have a Zoom option so people can participate from home.

Cool that you are training for another 50K and love that your fitness business is thriving! Running has definitely kept me grounded. It’s given me a way to stay focus although I am training for a marathon which may or may not happen.

I think we’re all kinda in that boat. The training for something that may or may not happen. I’ll be shocked if there are any road races this year to be honest. Unless they’re the small ones of 500 people or less where they can evenly space people!

Fingers crossed for you that your 50K happens! That’s awesome how your business is doing so well throughout all of this. Unless anything changes, I still plan on training for my marathon in November. It will be fun to do even a bit of marathon training – it’s been years and I miss it.

Thank you so much. I really hope it happens!

The business model has changed for me, that’s for sure. And not necessarily in a bad way at all! I’m just grateful for Zoom.

I’ve definitely relied on running throughout this time! I tried a few different classes but mostly stuck with running and strength. So glad you were able to keep running your business throughout all of this!

Yeah, business has been interesting. On the one hand, I’ve been able to reach more people. On the other hand, it’s not nearly the same as being at the gym. But it is what it is! And I’m honestly so thankful for the socialization even if it is via Zoom.

Running and walking are definitely the things that keep me grounded right now. I don’t think I would have kept half my sanity through this pandemic and current world climate without it.

I’m so excited for your upcoming 50K! That’s going to be awesome!

Same here! I’ve never walked so much in my life!! I’ve since stopped walking as much because let’s face it, I much prefer running. ๐Ÿ™‚

So excited for your 50k. I hope it goes off.

That’s great that you are able to teach your classes on ZOOM. What would we do without technology.

Running definitely keeps me sane. But working home has made me realize that it’s not enough. I need more movement. Thankfully, I discovered all the local trails and I get out for a walk as often as possible.

Seriously, what would we do without technology. Can you imagine being alive during the 1918 pandemic?

Running has definitely helped keep me sane through all of this. Some days that was the only time I spent outside. And, as much as I love my husband, some days that was the only time I had alone too.

Running has saved me. I don’t quite know what I would have done without it. I was initially devastated as all my races and carefully laid out plans were wiped off the calendar, but I didn’t lose running and I’m so grateful for that.

I agree with this 100%. I’m a homebody so staying home isn’t so awful for me, but I think without being able to run I’d be going crazy.

I did online fitness classes before this started — because i don’t belong to a gym!

You’re lucky to have a good friend to run with. While my running friends are probably safe, it’s too large a group (given my personal circumstances) to feel comfortable with & that’s hard. Even though it’s not that large, LOL!

Fingers crossed for your 50k!

I belong to Planet Fitness just for the weights really. But honestly I haven’t even been in over a year so I should just cancel. I teach my classes at a small outfit where I pay rent. But no one’s ready to go back to the gym to workout so I’ll stay online for a while!

I SO wish I could run with a group again. I waffle between feeling ready and not. It’s just not worth the risk.
